- FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT, THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION ABOUT A SHARED CULTURAL HERITAGE BETWEEN CHINA AND THE UK, IN PARTICULAR NEWCASTLE, WHICH FOCUSES ON 19TH-CENTURY SINO-BRITISH MARITIME COOPERATION AND SPECIFICALLY AS IT RELATES TO THE BEIYANG FLEET, ONE OF THE FOUR MODERNIZED CHINESE NAVIES IN THE LATE QING DYNASTY (1871-1909) BY:• THE RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE SIX TOMBS WHERE OFFICERS AND SOLDIERS OF THE BEIYANG FLEET ARE BURIED IN NEWCASTLE.• PROVIDING A NARRATIVE, IN THE FORM OF BILINGUAL INFORMATION BOARDS AND GUIDED TOURS/TALKS ABOUT THE CONTEXT AND CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LED TO THE BURIALS.• RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT THE CONNECTION SINO BRITISH MILITARY AND TRADE RELATIONS INCLUDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE BEIYANG FLEET AND ARMSTRONG SHIPYARD IN NEWCASTLE, WHO BUILT SUCH WARSHIPS FOR CHINA’S QING DYNASTY.• CONTRIBUTING TO ACADEMIC RESEARCH ABOUT THIS EARLY SHARED CULTURAL HERITAGE, DISSEMINATING SUCH RESEARCH TO THE PUBLIC BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO RELATED DOCUMENTS AND ARTEFACTS AND EXHIBITIONS.’
