02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The RSE is Scotland's National Academy. Our objectives are to encourage knowledge in all its forms and to apply that knowledge to the challenges facing the nation and the world. We are committed to sustaining world-class research while addressing three key challenges: climate change and environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and social cohesion and inclusion. We organise our work around five main interconnected programme areas: economy and enterprise, education, international, research and policy advice. In 2024–2025, the RSE assessed more than 700 applications from 18 Scottish higher education institutions, awarding over 100 grants worth a total of £1.38 million. Key highlights: • Over 4,600 attendees at RSE public events • 1,250 attendees at Curious, our summer ‘festival of knowledge’ • Over 60 events hosted, on a broad range of topics, showcasing the breadth & depth of the RSE fellowship • Delivered a programme of school talks and events to 1,800 school pupils.
