02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

We are set up primarily as a museum. We have a number of museum items that are based on Shetland, and in particular Yell. We have displays which are periodically changed.

Constitutional objectives

The objects for which the Trust is established are as follows:- (One) To promote an understanding and appreciation of local Shetland history and establish a local MUSEUM based in the Old Haa of Burravoe, Yell, Shetland hereinafter referred to as 'the museum' comprising an existing collection (hereinafter referred to as 'the existing collection') of objects, specimens, books, photographs and documents together with such other objects, specimens or collections as may from time to time be acquired in accordance with the provisions hereof ('the collection')' in respect of which there will be a strong presumption against the subsequent disposal of any specimen. and to provide for the protection of the specimens comprised in the collection from deterioration, damage, loss, accidental destruction or unauthorised disposal. (Two)To establish within the Old Haa of Burravoe suitable facilities for the safekeeping, storage and exhibition for the benefit of the public of items of local historic interest for the purpose of research, study or recreation. (Three) To promote interest in the improvement and enhancement of buildings of historical, architectural or educational interest on Yell and to help secure public access to such buildings. (Four) To encourage, stimulate and help promote cultural and artistic development among the inhabitants of Yell by the following means:- a) The provision of an EXHIBITION CENTRE in the Old Haa of Burravoe on a scale appropriate to the size of the community. b) The encouragement and promotion of the creation, practice, presentation and study of all forms of the arts - visual, performing or creative - and craftwork. c) The taking of steps to assist in arranging for the Yell community a better and more widespread service of performances and exhibitions of, and lectures about, all or any cultural or artistic pursuits.
