02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The objectives of the trust are the custody, preservation and use of the Lifeboat Service Memorial Book which narrates the origins of the lifeboat service and records the names of those known to have lost their lives at sea up to the end of 1973

Constitutional objectives

Assign, dispone and make over to them the Memorial Book but in Trust only for the purposes following, namely:- (ONE) arrangements shall be made by the Book Trustees for the general custody, preservation and use of the Memorial Book with the National Library for Scotland, or other appropriate body and for the provision of inspection facilities there by members of the public and in particular, the relatives and descendants of persons whose names are recorded in the Memorial Book. (Two) subject to the discretion of the Book Trustees, the Memorial Book may be lent to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution or other bodies for exhibition throughout the British Isles on the condition that the Memorial Book is not to be used for fund raising purposes. (Three) the Book Trustees shall make such insurance arrangements for the protection of the Memorial Book as they and their expert advisers deem necessary and when the Memorial Book is lent out in terms of Clause (Two) the Book Trustees shall be entitled to charge for insurance and transport costs.
