02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

To advance education and provide facilities for social welfare, recreation and leisure, the Association established, owns and runs the Staney Hill Hall. The Committee raises funds for repair and maintenance of the building, its fittings, furniture and equipment. programmes activities. and promotes use by other bodies that will benefit local residents. Residents are encouraged to help determine the work of the Association Committee by volunteering and joining the committee, and coming to general meetings. Social media (Facebook) is used for information and communication. We also use posters, the radio and local paper to advertise events or meetings. The Committee liaises with residents, voluntary organisations, agencies, and authorities to pursue resolution of, or improvement to, conditions in the community. Consultations are held in the Hall.

Constitutional objectives

The objects of the Association shall be:- (a) To promote the benefit of the inhabitants of North Staney Hill, Lerwick, and environs without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, by associating the Local Authorities, Voluntary Organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants. (b)To secure the establishment of a Community Centre and to co-operate with the Local Statutory Authority in the maintenance and management of the centre, for activities promoted by the Association in furtherance of the above objects or any of them.
