02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Arbroath Improvement trust was set up in 1936 by George Sturrock, a local business owner, in his will he gifted £10,000 to the towns people of Arbroath be held by held in Trust, to 'Improve and beautify the Town'. A group of trustees were established representing the different stratas of society, Doctors, Church ministers, HIgh school head teacher, Factory owners and Artisans. This capital over the years has been invested in a share portfolio and has grown. The current Trustees meet twice a year and reveiw applications for assistance form Arbroath basses societies and groups.

Constitutional objectives
The objects of the society shall be:- a) To present annually or at such periods as the Society might determine a historical pageant connected with the signing of the Declaration of Independence of Scotland at Arbroath Abbey in 1320 and of other historical events leading up to or taking place shortly after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. b) To promote or organise as events ancillary to and in conjunction with the historical Pageant processions, entertainments, displays, exhibitions and such other matters of a like nature as the Society in its discretion shall deem fit.
