02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The charity achieves its objectives by publishing in the annual Transactions the best information on the natural sciences and antiquities of the three former counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. During the last year Volume 97 of the Transactions was published. The arranged programme of lectures for 2024/25 was successfully completed both live and via zoom. The AGM was held when members were sent reports by the President and Treasurer and members agreed to slightly increase membership fees wef 1st October 2025 and approved office bearers. A number of social outings were held throughout the year. The Young Researcher Competition was successfully managed and an award made to the winning student. A grant was made to Dumfries Museum for the Birrens Project.

Constitutional objectives
The objects of the Society are to collect, publish and disseminate the best information and knowledge on the natural sciences and human history pertaining to Dumfries and Galloway region. to promote the preservation of specimens, objects and records of natural scientific, historical and archaeological interest relating to the region. to encourage regional research and fieldwork in natural science, history and archaeology by private individuals or public bodies and afford them advice and support, to ensure such activities are of benefit to our understanding of the human and natural history of the region and to the preservation and care of all natural and human heritage assets within the region.
