02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

UVS is set up to preserve and promote the traditional Rites of the Roman Catholic Church, most importantly the Mass promulgated by Pope St Pius V and everything that goes along with it, principally the Latin language and Gregorian chant. We achieve through trying to bring about better access and awareness of the Latin Mass by arranging Masses, both regular and special. training altar servers and singers. acquiring liturgical paraphernalia to donate to priests and those who need it.

Constitutional objectives

a) The preservation and, if necessary, the restoration of Latin in the Mass and in the administration of all Rites and Sacraments of the Catholic Church as laid down in Mediator Dei and confirmed in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. (b) The preservation in perpetuity of the Tridentine Mass of St Pius V as the surest means of safeguarding sound and orthodox teaching on the Eucharist. (c) To promote and encourage the use of Gregorian Plainsong and polyphonic music both at High Mass and in the evening Offices of the Church. (d) To defend at all times the sanctuaries of Catholic churches from any attempt at desacralisation and to oppose with fortitude modes of receiving the Sacraments that are lacking in reverence and piety. (e) To take every opportunity of explaining that the use of Latin is essential for the unity of Faith and Faithful. (f) To provide a corporate means whereby Catholics can express themselves on these matters to both the Hierarchy and the parochial clergy.
