02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Wishaw New Kirk stands within a long tradition of Christian ministry in this area. Long before the town of Wishaw developed, the people of this community were served by the ancient rural parish of Cambusnethan. From the medieval church, through the Reformation of 1560, and into the life of the Church of Scotland, generations of ministers and congregations faithfully served scattered communities, offering worship, teaching, and pastoral care. As the population gradually moved south and industry developed, new congregations were established to serve the expanding town. Wishaw Old Parish Church, Cambusnethan Old & Morningside Parish Church, and later St Mark’s Church in Coltness all emerged from this shared heritage. These congregations grew from the life and ministry of the original Cambusnethan parish.Through the formation of Wishaw New Kirk, these congregations have now come together.In many respects, the story has come full circle.
