02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team (LMRT) was established in the late 1960s by local climbers to help fellow climbers in difficulty in the mountains of Lochaber and especially on Ben Nevis. We provide rescue services on behalf of Police Scotland with the majority of our activity taking place on Ben Nevis (which sees hundreds of thousands of visitors per year) and the surrounding mountains in the Lochaber area.

Constitutional objectives
2.1 The Team’s charitable Purposes are:- a) To provide free of charge a mountain rescue service in Fort William and Lochaber area for members of the public who are injured, lost or immobilised anywhere on the mountains or elsewhere in that area, and to recover, if possible, the bodies of those persons who have sustained an accident in that area. b) To organise co-operation where appropriate amongst the Police, all other emergency and rescue organisations and other climbers or hill users (not being Members of the Team) to further the objects of the Team. c) To acquire, maintain and hold in readiness all equipment and apparatus necessary for carrying out the objects of the Team. d) To afford opportunities for members of the Team to practise the skills required for carrying out the primary objects of the Team.
