02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Our principal activity is grant-making and to achieve our objects we work thematically, investing in registered charities that deliver services aligned to our funding themes. We do this by accepting grant applications which are assessed on their merit and fit with both our funding themes, and strategic priorities.

Constitutional objectives

The primary focus of the Trust is to support charitable activities that will provide benefit to those residing in Scotland. The Trustees shall therefore hold and apply the Trust Fund and the income thereof for such charities that are registered in, or which will operate in Scotland, for the following purposes: 4.1 The care and welfare of individuals living with neurodevelopmental or neurodegenerative disorders of genetic or other aetiology, or from disorders affecting the nervous system resulting from specific incidents caused by having an accident or by poison or infection which result in damage to motor control, behavior, communication or personality or from a combination of these. 4.2 The care and welfare of individuals who are either blind or living with visual impairment, or who are known or suspected to be at risk of developing blindness or visual impairment. 4.3 Scotland-led research into the causation, prevention or treatment and/or management, of the conditions set out in subparagraphs 4.1 and 4.2 above. 4.4 The care and welfare of children and young persons under the age of eighteen years who have been or are in danger of being neglected or abused physically, sexually or mentally. 4.5 The care and welfare of young persons who have been or are in danger of being neglected or abused physically, sexually or mentally, who are also eligible for after care services as set out in section 29 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 as amended. 4.6 The encouragement and promotion of welfare conditions for children and young persons under the age of 18 years whereby the likelihood of physical, sexual or mental abuse and/or neglect is reduced. 4.7 The care and welfare of non-human living creatures, to affirm the right of every non-human living creature to humane treatment. to include: 4.7.1 any non-human living creatures which are either in danger, facing danger, the victims of or in danger of being the victims of physical and/or mental abuse. and 4.7.2 The encouragement of suitable welfare conditions for non-human living creators with a view to the reduction of the likelihood of physical and/or mental abuse and to ensure that their physical and mental needs are properly met.
