02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Every parent wants to give their child the best possible start in life but often things can get in the way of that – things like poverty, poor parental mental health, lack of a support network, domestic abuse, relationship breakdown or having a negative experience of being parented. This is where Home-Start Aberdeen comes in. Our home-visiting volunteers provide support to young families helping to ease these pressures and assisting parents to deal with the barriers and challenges they face, helping to create a space where relationships can be nurtured and children thrive. Home-Start provides a breathing space for parents, helps to prevent family breakdown and supports social workers and health visitors who refer families in need to our services. We also offer peer support through our family group work and provide practical sessions in families' own homes to developing cooking skills, budgeting and shopping advice and raise awareness of good weaning and child nutrition.
