02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
SPRED exists to support children and adults living with a learning disability (friends) in their journey of faith. We do this through a network of small groups based in parishes in the Archdiocese of Glasgow and at the SPRED Centre. In these small groups each friend is accompanied by a trained volunteer and are offered opportunities to grow in their faith in a way that is appropriate for them. Groups also support their friends to take part in the life of their parish through joining with the parish community at Mass and playing a full part in the liturgical celebration. SPRED also works with a small number of schools. Work with schools includes preparation for the sacraments First Holy Communion and Confirmation, and for older pupils, offering opportunities to experience a retreat. In addition we have a few family groups where parents and children can enjoy the SPRED experience together, supported by staff and trained volunteers.
