02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Bowden Village Committee exists as a charity to manage Bowden Common and other built assets eg Pant Well for the benefit of the residents of Bowden. Bowden Village Committee also performs the function of a community council and has adopted the main principles of the Scottish Borders Council's Scheme of Establishment, for example open elections. Bowden Village Committee members are automatically elected as Trustees of Bowden Common. The work of the Trustees is supported by a Trust Fund to maintain the Common, and the Committee also conduct a variety of community council functions such as consultation, respond to planning applications, deal with issues such as dog fouling, speeding, parking issues, liaise with Scottish Borders Council and key agencies such as Police Scotland.

Constitutional objectives

3.1 The purposes of the Committee shall be:- To provide recreational facilities, with the object of improving conditions of life for Bowden residents by maintaining, safeguarding and improving the amenities, rights of way and other recreational assets of Bowden Village (including maintenance of the Pant Well, School Shed and Brunton Fountain) either on their own initiative or in consultation with the Scottish Borders Council and its members or their successors. To promote the advancement of environmental protection and improvement by retaining ownership of the Bowden Common land (“the Common”) and conserving and protecting the natural environment of the Common for the public benefit. and To promote the advancement of citizenship, arts, heritage and culture by close liaison with the Management Committee of Bowden Village Hall being a registered charity. 3.2 The Common consists of the main Common, West Common to Longleefoot and the South Common as shown on the map attached hereto. 3.3 The Committee shall be non-party in politics and non-discriminatory and shall represent all persons in the Area.
