02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Operation of a heritage industrial railway, branded as the Doon Valley Railway, using steam and vintage diesel traction. A museum on the site is currently being developed.

Constitutional objectives

The Company’s objects are:- (i) (a) To take over the assets, liabilities and contracts of and to hold the whole or any part of the property and (so far as this is not inconsistent with any other provision of this memorandum) to continue to carry on and supplement the charitable work hereinbefore carried on by the existing unincorporated association known or sometimes known as “They Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group”, which body was founded in the year 1974, and of the unincorporated association known or sometimes known as “The Scottish Industrial Railway Centre” which was founded in the year 1985. (b) to promote or encourage the following objects by charitable means, but not otherwise: (c) to establish and operate a working railway for both goods and passenger traffic and an industrial museum in the South West of Scotland and to carry fare paying passengers or good son track approved and Licensed for this purpose. (d) To obtain locomotives, rolling stock, machinery, instruments, tools, books, photographs, documents and any other items of railway and associated industrial interest. (e) where possible to restore items acquired for the museum to working condition. (f) to display such items in operation and in an appropriate environment. (g) to promote an interest by the general public, education authorities and other interested parties in the railway and industrial heritage of Scotland (h) To organise and promote visits by the public, authorities and parties to the Groups’ museum and such other facilities which the Group may be involved.
