02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Street Level was established by Glasgow Photography Group in 1989 as Glasgow’s first dedicated photographic art gallery and open access resource, with support from public and charitable funds as well as the voluntary input of several benefactors. Its founding principles of making photography accessible, physically, attitudinally, and artistically are the cornerstones of the charity, and this is carried forward in an inclusive programme and venue which advances the arts and creative learning through exhibitions, education, training, and facilities for members and the public. The programme of activity highlights the charity’s commitment to positively addressing issues around cultural diversity, socio-economic deprivation, disadvantaged learners, disability, and access. It supports and develops quality and excellence in photography, both in the work it produces and curates, and in the experience of audiences and participants.
