02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Trust has the aims of preserving the cottage birthplace of John Paul Jones, the father of the American Navy and to educate about his life and achievements. To achieve this, funding was secured from Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) in 2023 under their Capital Resilience Fund. Originally stalled, under revised quotes, the project was completed in 2025 This fund helped consolidate the exterior of the birthplace cottage and the newly installed solar panelling and heating will help mitigate future damp issues. Also in 2025, all documents, policies and a forward plan were completed and submitted to MGS in November for consideration in awarding the museum full accreditation status. 1275 visitors were welcomed into the museum in 2025, 110 of these were under 16 years old.

Constitutional objectives
for the advancement of the education of the general public without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions, by provision of the Museum comprising the Existing Collection together with such other objects, specimens or collections as may from time to time be acquired in accordance with the provisions of this Deed ('the Collection') in respect of which there wdl be a strong presumption against the subsequent disposal of any specimen. For the avoidance of doubt, the Trust Fund shall be used exclusively for educational purposes under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code.'
