02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The core purpose of Motherwell and District Women’s Aid is help prevent violence against women and girls, and to reduce the negative impacts of domestic abuse through the provision of specialist support to at risk women and children. We also undertake prevention work to build knowledge and skills of individuals, which supports a shift in the structural, cultural and societal contexts in which violence occurs. Our core services include: • Prevention work, including school sessions, awareness raising with community groups and organisations, training for (and influencing the policy and practice of) other agencies, campaigns and social media promotions •

Constitutional objectives
a. To provide temporary refuge for women and their children (if any) where the women have suffered abuse (emotional, physical and sexual) in their home or within a relationship with a partner. b. To offer support, information and help to any women and their children (if any) who ask for such help whether or not they are refuge residents and also to offer support and advise to any women and children who have left a temporary refuge. c. To encourage women to determine their own futures. d. To provide the opportunities for the education and emotional needs of the children (if any) to be met, particularly those resident in refuges. e. To work to provide the opportunity for shared permanent housing for abused women and their children (if any). f To encourage statutory authorities and other agencies to recognise their obligations, legal and otherwise, towards abuse women and their children (if any) and to act accordingly towards the prevention of abuse and relief of suffering. g. Mindful of the fact that abuse (emotional, physical and sexual) is the result of the position of women in society, to promote education and to inform the community and their representatives with respect to the abuse of women and its prevention. h. To encourage research into the causes, the prevention and relief of such suffering and abuse. 1. To encourage such training both for ourselves and others as well best meet the objectives of Motherwell & District Women's Aid. J. To do all other things as will properly attain the above purposes.
