02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The local authority commission our service to support unpaid carers in their caring role. This is done through the respite service where a trained support worker replaces the carer for a designated period of time. The Carers Centre provides information, advice, emotional support, advocacy, adult carer support plans, monthly carers support group, provide a resource library, deliver microgrants for Time to Live through Shared Care Scotland. Wheelchairs and rollators are also available for loan. Crossroads Care Orkney also manages the Orkney Young Carers service. Young Carers are caring for a relatiove with an illness, physical or mental or drug or alcohol abuse. This is achieved by one to one or group sessions and gives Young peoiple something to look forward to, develop their skills, build confidence and speak to their peers.

Constitutional objectives
2 The company’s objects are to improve the quality of life for carers, those for whom they care, and elderly and disabled people by giving practical help, emotional support, advice and information as appropriate through the provision of a Support Workers Respite Service and to manage the Orkney Carers Centre and Orkney Young Carers in order to: (a) Relieve stress on persons or families caring for people of any age with physical, mental or sensory impairment (b) Care in appropriate circumstances for people of any age with physical, mental or sensory impairment who are living alone (c) Support Carers to enable them to sustain their caring role. thus enabling the cared for person to remain in their home.
