02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Carers Centre service provides information, advice and support to unpaid Carers across the region. The service is provided to Adult and Young Adult Carers from 19 plus as well as to Young Carers aged 7-18 years. The organisation has 25 staff based throughout Dumfries and Galloway. It operates a main Carers Centre in Dumfries and works from 4 other bases in outlying locality areas. Services provided are: • Information and Advice • One to one support – emotional and practical • Group and Activity opportunities • Grants and Funding • Short Breaks Funding • Staffing support for the Carers Hub at DGRI • Assistance with planning / advocacy for individual Carers • In house welfare benefits specialist support provided in partnership with DAGCAS • Ensuring Carers are informed of their rights • Devolved responsibility to provide Adult Carers Support Plans and Young Carers Statements on behalf of the Local Authority • Assistance in the delivery of the local Carers Strategy

Constitutional objectives
(i) to improve the quality of life of people of all ages including children who unpaid are caring or who have cared for elderly, sick, disabled, or otherwise dependent persons, adults and children, in all locations who are in necessitous circumstances and of dependents of carers being dependents who are themselves in necessitous circumstances and, for that purpose, to promote the material welfare of such carers as aforesaid. (ii) to relieve and alleviate and to advance, promote, encourage and assist in the relief or alleviation of all kinds of mental and physical infirmity, sickness, disablement or handicap, including mental illness attributable to caring among carers and those persons for whom they are caring. (iii) to advance education and promote awareness concerning caring among carers, statutory and voluntary agencies and the public.
