02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The charity was set up to care for, maintain and preserve the Shawbost Norse mill and kiln buildings, mill workings and surrounding area including access to the site. The mill was restored to its present form in 1993/1994 with the kiln being built in 1996. The charity's aim has been to keep the site as near the original as possible, so as to show visitors what this example of crofting life was like.

Constitutional objectives
The objects of the Society shall be to promote and encourage the following objects by charitable means but not otherwise: a) To stimulate public interest in, and care for, the Norse Mill building and surrounding grounds and access path. b) To secure means to maintain and preserve the Norse Mill building, mill race and mill gear. c) To pursue these ends by means of meetings, exhibitions, lectures, publications, conferences and publicity, and the promotion of schemes of a charitable nature.
