02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Advocacy Northeast provides independent advocacy for people ordinarily resident in Aberdeenshire who, through mental illness, disorder, learning disability or particular social circumstances, may require support to understand their rights, have a voice and make decisions when dealing with matters relating to their health and care. Advocacy is about amplifying and strengthening the voice of those who may be vulnerable and are often at risk of being marginalised or excluded from services thereby enabling them to have as much control as possible over their lives. In order to do this, our advocates can support people to access information to understand their options, help them navigate and access systems and services, attend meetings with them, help write letters or make phone calls on their behalf and ensure that their views and wishes are made known to others. We meet with people in hospital, assisted accommodation, care homes, in the community or in any mutually agreeable venue.
