02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The Ripple Project is a community-led charity and social enterprise in Edinburgh focused on tackling poverty, inequality, social isolation and improving quality of life for people of all ages in the Restalrig, Lochend and Craigentinny areas. It works with local residents to create and deliver services that are accessible and responsive to local needs, helping people to help themselves. Ripple Project Key activities include running a community café, lunch clubs, social and wellbeing activities, exercise and walking groups, creative and drop-in sessions, and specific services for older adults. The Ripple also offers wellbeing programmes, volunteer opportunities, support with skills, social connection and activities designed to improve physical and mental health and reduce isolation. Volunteers of all ages help deliver its services, and many participants go on to become volunteers themselves, reinforcing community resilience and inclusion.

Constitutional objectives

The Company is established for entirely charitable objects and purposes only ('the Objects') and for the benefit of the Parish of St Margaret’s (the ‘beneficiaries' as defined in Schedule 1). In particular the Objects shall be: i. to advance and protect the good physical and mental health of the residents of the beneficiaries. and ii. to advance health education among the said beneficiaries. and iii. to provide recreational facilities and activities in the interests of social welfare which aim to improve the conditions of life of the said beneficiaries. iv. To relieve the needs of beneficiaries who are in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or who are otherwise vulnerable, to advance education, to prevent or relieve poverty of such people and to advance community development. v. To promote, conduct and/or support other similar projects and programmes which further charitable purposes for the benefit of elderly, disabled, disadvantaged or otherwise vulnerable people within the Operating Area. and to do so in a manner without distinction of sex, race, age, religious or other opinion vi. The development and teaching of civic values. the promotion or protection of the rights of the citizen. the encouragement of voluntary activity and increasing the involvement of individuals in community activity. helping voluntary organisations, charities and social enterprises to build up their skills.
