02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The charity exists to preserve, celebrate, and promote Shetland’s unique textile heritage by operating the only specialist textile museum in Shetland. Its purpose is to safeguard traditional skills, inspire new generations of makers, and ensure that the islands’ rich cultural story remains accessible to the public. The Museum curates and maintains collections of historical garments, tools, and locally made textiles that reflect Shetland’s distinctive craft traditions. Provides exhibitions that share the history, techniques, and cultural importance of Shetland knitting, weaving, and other textile arts. Volunteers demonstrate to pass on traditional skills. Engages with local makers, cultural organizations, and historians to support research, craft preservation, and community engagement. Raises income through shop sales, donations and grants, to ensure we can continue to protect the collection.
