02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
We are an affiliated club to the Robert Burns World Federation (no 809) and were founded in 1957. We exist to promote the life, work and legacy of Scotland's national bard Robert Burns. As well as regular monthly club meetings (Sept through May each year) we also hold an annual Burns Supper in January and a competition for local primary schools every February during which the pupils perform recitations, songs and instrumental pieces from Burns work. First, second and third placed pupils can then go on to a Lanarkshire and even a national competition. We also support other Burns clubs, attending each other's events and also national Burns events and commemorations. Our members give talks and presentations to schools and other educational bodies such as older folks clubs. We are open to all individuals who are interested in Burns.
