02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

MCFB provision targets high SIMD areas, such as Leith and Craigmillar, where families face higher rates of unemployment, social exclusion, low educational attainment, health issues and, consequently, quality of life. Most parents we support are new migrants and refugees with complex migration, displacement, loss, and trauma experiences, predisposing them to mental health struggles including anxiety, depression and PTSD. Such can have similarly significant impacts on parenting, and thus, on children’s wellbeing. Families often struggle from extreme social isolation, within a context of cultural dissonance, and lack support networks. For many, this is further exacerbated by experiences of racism, domestic/gender-based abuse, poverty and uncertain immigration situations. The families we support have intersecting identities (lone parents, people living in temporary accommodations, large family households, have children under the age of 1, affected by disabilities and more).
