02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
BEMIS (Scotland) Limited is a national infrastructure charity for Scotland's ethnic and cultural minority voluntary sector. It exists to empower and build the capacity of minority-led community groups — helping them form, develop and achieve their aims — and to advance inclusion, active citizenship, human rights education and diversity recognition. A key part of its work is policy influence: developing and advocating for race equality and human rights policy with local, Scottish, UK and international government bodies, and coordinating networks (such as the Race, Equality and Human Rights Network) that give minority community organisations a collective voice. In short, it's an umbrella/support body rather than a direct service provider — working through and on behalf of Scotland's ethnic minority third sector rather than delivering frontline services to individuals itself.

Constitutional objectives
(a) To relieve poverty among members of black and ethnic minority communities (regardless of age, gender. disability, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, nationality or residence) ('the Members') in Scotland ('the Operating Area') (b) To advance education among members in the Operating Area and facilitate research programmes and make the results thereof available to the public and to promote and/or provide training in skills of all kinds, particularly such skills as will assist Members (c) To relieve the suffering and distress of Members within Operating Area suffering from mental or physical disability, distress, illness, impairment or old age and generally to promote health issues for the benefit of Members (d) To promote, establish and operate other schemes of a charitable nature for the benefit of the community as a whole within the Operating Area (e) To promote trade and industry, for the benefit of the general public
