02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The company was incorporated in February 1998 to maintain for the enjoyment of the public the garden which is some two and a half acres in size forming part of the Glebe Of Duddingston Kirk. The garden was developed by the Drs Andrew and Nancy Neil starting from scratch in 1964 and they transformed it from little more than a barren rough and uncultivated slope, into a prize-winning garden for the enjoyment of the general public. The Trustees aim to ensure that the garden is managed in such a way as to continue it broadly in accordance with the original wishes and intentions of the Drs Neils. The garden is open to the public all year round free of charge. In addition, the Trustees aim, as finances permit, to develop the garden to improve its accessibility and, by projects for the restoration of existing features and the creation of new ones, to increase its interest and benefit to members of the public as a place of beauty and tranquillity with educational value.

Constitutional objectives
(a) To promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Duddingston Village, Edinburgh and its environs without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, by associating the Local Authority, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to provide, or assist in the provision of, facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants (b) To advance religion by the promotion of Christian principles and, in particular, those which relate to creating and fostering a sense of community (c) To preserve and conserve the natural environment including the flora and fauna and created landscapes within Scotland and in particular those within the environs of Duddingston Village, Edinburgh (d) To advance education (e) To promote, establish, operate and/or support other schemes of a charitable nature for the benefit of the community within Scotland and in particular within and in the envirOns of Duddingston Village, Edinburgh
