02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
BCT is a company that is owned and managed by the local community to promote the common good of the inhabitants of Birse parish and deliver wider public benefits. It has bought, restored and maintains several Grade A listed buildings, noteably a souter's shop unique in Scotland, ancient wooden water powered sawmills, and a bucket mill which are open to the public to enjoy and gain knowledge into the way things were done 200 years ago. It also owns two forests which provide an income and also recreational pleasure for local inhabitants. As a public service, BCT also organises the annual Remembrance service, attended by council officials and local inhabitants.

(i) to relieve poverty. (ii) to advance education. (iii) to protect, conserve, regenerate and promote, for the benefit of the public, the restoration of the native woodlands, including their flora and fauna, and other assets in the Parish of Birse, Aberdeenshire, as an important part of Scotland's natural environment. and (iv) to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of the said Parish and its environs and members of the public generally, without distinction of political, religious or other opinions by associating with the local authorities, voluntary organisations and said inhabitants in a common effort to provide, or assist in the provision of, facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants by
