02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Hold and provide for the protection of a nationally recognised collection of specimens, artefacts and other items having collective or individual artistic or scientific importance as may from time to time be owned or possessed by SMCCT. SMMCT's collections relate mainly to the Scottish Coal Mining Industry including not only peat equipment and tools but also items of social history, documents, records and photographs. SMMCt entered into a management agreement with the National Mining Museum of Scotland (NMMST) in 2000. NMMST is responsible for and undertakes on behalf of SMMCT the protection of SMMCT's collections and for their safe keeping, management and care.

Constitutional objectives
(a) for the advancement of the education of the general public, without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions. (b) to provide for the protection of the items comprised in the Collection from deterioration, damage, loss, accidental destruction or unauthorised disposal in respect of which there shall be a strong presumption against the disposal of any specimen. (c) to form, establish and support and to aid in the formation, establishment and support of any other charitable companies, institutions, associations, trusts or societies formed for objects similar to the objects set out above.
