02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Disability Information Scotland (DIS) is a Scotland-wide charity based in Edinburgh providing reliable, accessible and Scotland-specific disability information through a telephone Information Line, online and printed information guides, the Scottish Disability Directory (over 1,700 entries) and accessible information training for organisations. In 2024–25, DIS supported 2,596 people via the helpline, 28,108 directory users, 23,080 information guide users, and trained 203 people through e-learning and in-person sessions. Our work helps people understand their rights and navigate complex Scottish and UK systems, reducing isolation and helping people access support such as disability benefits, social care, transport schemes and accessible housing. National work in Scotland highlights that digital exclusion is strongly associated with low income, disability, older age and other vulnerabilities, and that those already disadvantaged are most at risk of being further excluded.
