02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra was set up to encourage, develop, and keep alive traditional Scots fiddle music among local young musicians. Founded in 1982 by Wallace and Lex Galbraith, the youth orchestra provides young people aged roughly 10 to 18 an opportunity to learn, play, and perform energetic arrangements of traditional Scottish music. The orchestra welcomes a wide range of young instrumentalists—including violinists (fiddlers), cellists, double bass players, percussionists, accordionists, guitarists, and bagpipers. The orchestra performs dynamic concerts for local audiences throughout Ayrshire, across the UK, and internationally to share Scottish culture and customs worldwide.

Constitutional objectives
The objects of the Orchestra shall be to educate the public, in the arts and sciences and in particular the art and science of fiddle and other traditional forms of music by the presentation of concerts and other related activities. In furtherance thereof,but not otherwise, the Orchestra shall seek: • To encourage the study, performance and development of Scottish fiddle and other forms of traditional music by the young people of Ayrshire and beyond. • To provide the opportunity to young people of Ayrshire to partiCipate in the performing arts. • To participate in the musical development of all young people irrespective of gender, social, religious or racial background and thereby contribute towards their social development.
