02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
We are a focal point for the arts in the region and it is our responsibility to deliver a programme of varied, wide-ranging activity with strong appeal across all audience and participant segments. We have a vast breadth of engagement, with over 400,000 attendances annually across our venues and festivals with many more visiting to see our exhibitions and free-to-attend performances. Our position in the North-east fosters pride in our region, developing a clear sense of place and promoting homegrown culture. Our primary focus is on deepening meaningful engagement with young people, over 75s, those in areas of deprivation and marginalised groups such as the global majority, the LGBTQ+ community and those with physical and mental health issues through a variety of engagement activities, workshops, classes, festivals, exhibitions and most importantly our programme.
