02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The SCIO exists to improve the quality of lives of residents in the community by supporting initiatives which address the challenges of rural living. It aims to work towards enhancing the health, well-being, educational, economic and environmental conditions of the local community. In particular, the SCIO looks to mitigate the impacts that a high volume of traffic has on the lives of residents, to manage the effects that increasing numbers of tourists have on the area, and to make the most of the economic boost such visitors can bring. The SCIO also works towards encouraging community development, including regeneration where possible.

Constitutional objectives

4.1 to improve the quality of the lives of the residents in the community by helping to sustain a viable rural community in this area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 4.2 to provide support for initiatives which address the challenges of rural living and enhance the health and wellbeing, educational, economic and environmental condition of the residents. 4.3 to mitigate the impacts that a high volume of traffic has on the lives of the residents as well as providing, or assist in providing, recreational facilities which will be available to members of the community and the public at large with the object of improving the conditions of life of the community. 4.4 to advance community development including regeneration within the community
