02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET), operating locally as the Perth & Kinross Countryside Initiative (PKCI), is a volunteer-led charity providing free farm, classroom and outdoor learning for young people aged 3–18. Founded in 1999, RHET is one of 13 Scottish initiatives, linking farming, food production, forestry, estate management and environmental awareness to the Curriculum for Excellence. In 2024–25, PKCI reached more than 6,000 children through farm visits and farmer-led classroom sessions. Its activities include free educational resources, outdoor events, school competitions and projects, and training for farmers and teachers. PKCI also connects learners with rural professionals and works with partners to develop useful resources and professional learning. The initiative relies entirely on fundraising. Transport costs, particularly bus hire, remain a major barrier for schools wishing to access real-world countryside experiences.

3. The Company is established for charitable objects and purposes only and in particular, to advance public education by (i) the promotion and encouragment of the dissemination of information concerning Scottish wildlife, agriculture,forestry, rural industries and the countryside (ii) increasing the general publics awareness of their symbiosis with the biological diversity, rural enviroment countryside life and economy of Scotland ( i i i ) improving the general publics understanding of the policies and actions necessary to sustain longterm food and timber production, and provision for wildlife and its habitats and (iv) by carrying out and developing at a local level the activities of the charitable body with which the Company is and shall [subject as aftermentioned) remain affiliated, namely,The Royal Highland Education Trust (a company limited by guarantee, incorporated in Scotland with registered number 123873, and being Scottish charity number SC007492, hereinafter referred to as the 'RHET')the operations of the Company to be confined to the designated geographical area generally known as RHET Perth & Kinross Countryside Initiative area [hereinafter referred to as the RHET P &KCI area being the present local authority areas of Perth and Kinross
