02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Newbattle Abbey College provides routes into, and back into, further and higher education in a way that fits with peoples’ needs and circumstances. Our students may be returning to education after some time away or coming straight from school. All of our students benefit from the unique and supportive environment that the College offers. Courses offered include Preparation for Learning and Work, Rural Skills, National Certificate in Social Sciences, Access to Higher Education, Social Sciences: Associate Degree Programme, Forest and Outdoor Learning Awards and Adult Achievement Awards. The College is a venue for events, weddings and conference hire.

Constitutional objectives

The objects of the Company are: 2.1.1 the advancement of education and training. 2.1.2 the advancement of citizenship. and 2.1.3 the advancement of the arts, heritage and culture, by , in particular (but not limited to) the maintenance and upkeep, and use of the College as: a) an adult education college (residential or otherwise). b) a centre for conferences on educational subjects or public questions, summer schools, short-term or long-term courses of study (residential or otherwise) and also for additional educational and social activities. c) a place of study or recreation for persons engaged in or concerned with education or public work. d) a holiday centre for British and other students, provided always that the College shall not be used for the teaching of sectarian religion or as a school of medicine and declaring that the activities set out in sub-paragraphs a), b), c) and d) above shall be for individuals of all ages.
