02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Leverburgh Enhancement Group is a a charitable unincorporated association governed by its constitution dated 10th May 2003 and registered with OSCR. During the year it took over the South Harris Historical Society an amended its charitable purposes accordingly with the agreement an authority of OSCR. It also changed its name to Leverburgh Enhancement Group incorporating South Harris Historical Society. The purpose and administration arrangements are set out in the constitution.

Constitutional objectives
The objects of the Group shall be:- a) the advancement of the heritage, language, culture and arts through the provision of exhibitions, events, facilities and other services relating to the historical, geographical and cultural importance of the South of Harris and the creation of a dedicated heritage centre and archive:- i)To bring together, hold, adequately house, conserve and document a collection of specimens being of historical, artistic or scientific importance, and in respect of which there will be a strong presumption against the subsequent disposal of any item. ii) To adopt a written collecting policy and review it at least every five years, which policy shall define the types of specimens which the Society wishes to include in the collection and the geographical area from which such specimens may be drawn. iii) To maintain an accurate and current register of all specimens acquired, or removed from the collection. iv) The advancement of education providing a better understanding of the built and natural environment, culture, heritage and history of South Harris as well as the development of skills, capabilities and understanding. b) to promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of South Harris and Harris as a whole and in particular the advancement of education, the preservation and safeguarding of the physical and mental health of the community through physical and education in relation thereto. c) the provision in the interests of social welfare and for the purposes of improving the conditions of life of the persons for whom the same are primarily intended, of facilities for physical recreation (including sports) which shall be available to the public at large, including special facilities for persons who by reason of their youth , age infirmity or disablement, poverty or social and economic circumstances may have need of special facilities. and d) To do all other things as will properly attain the above purposes.
