02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Tong-Len UK was established in 2005 to raise funds for the work of Tong-Len Charitable Trust in northern India in the region of Dharamsala. Tong-Len UK is the major contributor to the financial needs of Tong-Len Charitable Trust. It raises funds through donations given by individuals from many countries particularly the UK, Australia, the USA abd Europe. Tong-Len's work involves the support of children in hostel accommodation and the running of a school for all grades from kindergarten to year 10. It also support children in years 11 and 12 in local schools. Tong-Len also has significant health work and uses inter alia a mobile health bus to visit slum communities in the local area and beyond. Vocation education was established a few years ago with courses being run in electrical training, tailoring, a driving school and waster management.

Constitutional objectives

To advance the education of displaced residents of all ages within the Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India by supporting local community based organisations and thereby further their educational prospects. To relieve poverty and financial hardship of such people. To promote the good health of such people by encouraging the development of local schemes that address issues of reproductive health and sanitation. To promote and support eh charitable work of Tong-Len in such ways as are charitable according to UK law.
