02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Beith Cultural & Heritage Society was formed with the aim of establishing a collection of photographs and objects associated with the heritage of the town and surrounding area, thus ensuring their preservation while also providing information, and promoting an interest and understanding of local history. Another aim was ensuring the future of the former Townhouse building, which was empty and surplus to the requirements of its owner, the local authority. The Townhouse, which is run by volunteers, is run as a local heritage centre with a mixture of permanent exhibits and temporary exhibitions, usually with a local theme. Admission to the exhibitions is always free. A particular focus is preserving and displaying Beith made furniture. We encourage visits from groups and the local primary school. Additionally, we hold regular talks on a variety of historical topics. These are held during the day and evenings to cater for as many people as possible.

Constitutional objectives
The objects of the Society are to advance the education of the public, in particular the local community, in the cultural, historical and natural heritage of Beith and its environs. In furtherance thereof but not otherwise, the Society shall seek: (1) to educate and provide information on the said history and heritage in order to raise awareness of the same amongst members of the public and (2) to promote an active interest in, and understanding of, that history and heritage. In furtherance thereof but not otherwise, the Society shall have the following powers:- (a) to acquire accommodation, including the Beith Townhouse, by hire, long lease or purchase. (b) to acquire or be custodian of artefacts and other material relating to the culture and history of Beith and its environs. (c) to improve, manage and otherwise deal with material and property in the ownership or custodianship of the Society. (d) to sell, let, hire out or otherwise deal with the property of the Society. (e) to employ such staff as are considered appropriate for the proper conduct of the Society's activities.
