02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Our charity is established to promote the Hindu religion by maintaining a Hindu (Ganesh) temple following the Saiva Siththaantha traditions of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. We support the spiritual, cultural, and educational needs of the local Hindu community in Glasgow and surrounding areas. To achieve this, we organise regular religious services, festivals, and cultural events, and we provide Tamil language classes, Hindu spiritual education, and IT and computer training. We also offer activities and facilities that support social welfare, including programmes for elderly members of the community and access to health and wellbeing advice. In addition, we work to relieve poverty in Sri Lanka—particularly in the North and East—and in Tamil Nadu through charitable support and community-led initiatives.

Constitutional objectives
(1) To advance the Hindu religion by establishing and maintaining a Hindu (Ganesh) temple according to Saiva Siththaantha traditions, principles and practices prevailing in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu (India). The name of the organisation shall be Sri Mangala Vinayahar Community Centre. (2) To relieve poverty in Sri Lanka, particularly in the North and East and Tamil Nadu. (3) To advance education for the public benefit in the values of Hinduism and the Hindu way amongst the local community. (4) To promote the benefit particularly, but not extensively, of the Hindu inhabitants of Glasgow and its environs without distinction of gender, sexuality, political, religious or other opinions by associating the local statutory authorities, voluntary organizations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities, or assist in the provision of facilities, in the interest of social welfare for recreation and other leisure-time occupation so that their conditions of life may be improved. In furtherance of these objectives, but not otherwise, the Association shall seek to organise and/or promote: (a) Cultural and educational events conducted for the community at large. (b) Tamil language and Hindu spiritual education classes. (c) Information Technology and computer classes. (d) Facilities for the special needs of the elderly in the community. (e) Health and medical advice.
