02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The charity is set up to connect capital with communities, social enterprises and the Third Sector in Scotland, in service of creating an Impact Economy. It achieves this through managing loan funds raised by external investors such as banks or the Scottish Government (from which a management fee is extracted), lending from its own unrestricted funds, or by equity investing in promising private businesses. Additionally, the charity runs events and workshops to build the market for social enterprise, facilitating funding opportunities and developing commercial and leadership skills. The charity also campaigns and works with public bodies to further the adoption of policy and legislation that works to deliver social good.

Constitutional objectives

The objects of the Company are to promote the advancement of citizenship and community development within Scotland and elsewhere for the benefit of the public by supporting the social sector and in particular widening access to funding for the social sector, identifying needs in the social sector, providing and developing and/or assisting in the provision and development of support, advice and the facilitation of finance for the social sector, all with a view to developing capacities and skills in, improving the financial sustainability and maximising the contribution of the social sector to society and such that, for the purpose of this clause the 'social sector' shall be taken to comprise:- (a) organisations which are recognised as charities. (b) social organisations which are (i) independent and/or voluntary organisations and established for purposes that add value to the community as a whole, or a significant section of the community, and (ii) which are not established primarily to distribute a profit (and on the basis that, for the avoidance of doubt, local government or other statutory authorities shall not be deemed to fall within the voluntary sector for the purposes of this clause). (c) companies and other legal entities which are wholly owned or controlled by one or more social sector organisation. and (d) smaller businesses operating in deprived areas that have been excluded from or declined finance by mainstream lenders.
