02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Provide free, independent and impartial advice and support to anyone who needs it, in Edinburgh and its surrounding communities with the purpose of reducing poverty, advancing human rights and campaigning on the issues that impact most of the lives of our community.

Constitutional objectives

Objects 4 The company has been formed to benefit principally the area of (a) The City of Edinburgh and (b) elsewhere (the “Area of Benefit”) with the following objects: 4.1 the advancement of education. 4.2 the prevention or relief of poverty. 4.3 the relief of those in need. 4.4 the advancement of health. 4.5 the advancement of citizenship or community development. 4.6 the promotion of equality and diversity. and 4.7 the advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation, particularly through (but not limited to) the following activities: 4.8 the provision of advice and assistance to individuals with a view to improve their understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities, facilitate access and use of the benefit system, and alleviate stress and other anxiety caused by unresolved issues. and 4.9 recruiting, training and developing local citizens who are engaged as volunteers in and for the company, who in turn assist members of the public within the Area of Benefit, and in doing so contribute to the development of the Area of Benefit.
