02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Established in 1991, Art in Hospital (AiH) is a pioneer at the intersection of contemporary visual art and medicine, delivering public benefit across Scottish healthcare environments. For 35 years, the charity has embedded professional artists within acute clinical settings, including Stroke Rehabilitation and Palliative Care. Through these visual arts programmes, AiH has supported thousands of patients in creative expression, directly enhancing patient well-being and equity of access. The continuity of this work has generated a significant volume of physical artworks, digital records, and institutional expertise. AiH is actively committed to the stabilisation, ethical stewardship, and progressive digitisation of these outputs. By embedding modern operational frameworks and digital accessibility, the charity ensures its unique creative methodologies remain resilient, compliant, and accessible to patients, healthcare staff, researchers and wider community.
