02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Point and Sandwick Trust is a charitable organisation based in the Outer Hebrides that uses the income of community generated wind power to support local social, cultural, educational and environmental development. The Trust built and operates the UK’s biggest community wind farm and has been recognised as leading the way in community renewable energy. Funding projects of all sizes, the Trust provides significant support within the crofting communities of Point and Sandwick on the Isle of Lewis, and the wider Western Isles.

Constitutional objectives

The Company's object is to promote the social, educational, cultural and environmental wellbeing of the people of the Western Isles and in particular the residents of the areas known as Point and Sandwick i.e. the area otherwise known as Sandwick and the Eye Peninsula and for the purposes hereof defined as comprising the whole area from and including North Street in the west to Tiumpanhead in the East and by all or any of the following means:- (i) the promotion of community development, including rural regeneration, following principles of sustainable development, where 'sustainable development'' means development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (ii) the provision of assistance to people who are disadvantaged by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial or other disadvantage. (iii) the promotion of education, including all forms of training for work and life skills. (iii) the advancement of the arts, culture and heritage, including support for the Gaelic arts and the protection of buildings and sites of architectural or historic importance. (iv) the provision and support of recreational activities for the community, especially for disadvantaged or vulnerable groups, such as young people or the disabled. (v) the protection and enhancement of the natural heritage and environment. (vi) the relief of poverty in such ways as may be thought fit.
