The Langholm Initiative

Constitutional objectives

The Organisation has been formed for the public benefit of the Communities of Eskdale including Langholm and Canonbie defined by the postcode areas DG13 and DG14 (“the Community”), with the Purposes listed in Clause 5 below (“the Purposes”), to be exercised following the principles of sustainable development (where sustainable development means development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs). Clause 5 The Organisation’s main purpose is consistent with furthering the achievement of sustainable development. The Organisation’s Purposes are: Clause 5.1 The advancement of education by providing a framework for local people to enhance their existing skills, to improve their potential for economic activity and/or their quality of life. Clause 5.2 To advance citizenship and community development by working with local businesses, employers and regional agencies to propagate community regeneration in the operating area by maintaining or improving the physical, social and economic environment and to assist those in the community who are at a disadvantage through social and/or economic circumstances. Clause 5.3 The advancement of environmental protection and improvement through the provision of opportunities to engage with the local environment. Clause 5.4 The advancement of arts, heritage, culture and science by supporting participation and access to creative and cultural activities through engagement with partners and development of related projects. Clause 5.5 The provision of recreational facilities, or the organization of recreational activities with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended.
