02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
COAST was set up with the support of the local community, to protect the seas around Arran and the Clyde from the harmful effects of seabed-damaging fishing practices by campaigning for the No Take Zone and Marine Protected Area, which were designated in 2008 and 2015 respectively. supporting and carrying out research which demonstrates the benefits of these protections. engaging with stakeholders including fishers, local and national networks to share information and fighting for better monitoring and management of the seas by engaging with politicians. awareness raising by involving the young people and the community.

Constitutional objectives
3. Objects (a) To improve the overall health and biodiversity of our seas and Scotland's marine environment, with particular focus on the Firth of Clyde. (b) To continue to work with the local community on the island of Arran and people of all ages and backgrounds to increase awareness of marine environmental issues, and press for effective management and recovery of Arran's coastal waters. (c) To build relationships with other communities and organisations at regional, national and international levels, to create a unified and stronger voice in support of promoting healthier and more productive oceans.
