02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The Museum is a visitor attraction that has been awarded 5 stars by Visit Scotland and is open all year round, except on 25/26 Dec and 1/2 Jan. On 22 Nov 2017 the Collection was recognised as being ‘Nationally Significant to Scotland’, an award administered by Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) on behalf of the Scottish Government. The Museum achieves a footfall of approximately 55,000 visitors each year and there a very active Facebook page with over 12,000 followers and a growing number of followers on its Instagram page. The Museum website has undergone significant modernisation to achieve greater ease of use and increased accessibility to those unable to visit in person. A virtual tour has been added to allow visitors to the website to see some of the Collection online. The website uses Google Translate, operational in multiple languages. The Museum is also a member of Trip Advisor and Google Business. The Museum has recently been awarded a Trip Advisor top 10% in the world.
