02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

East Coast FM’s (ECFM) broadcasting philosophy is ‘by the community for the community’. We are a highly regarded source of entertainment and information across East Lothian and the surrounding area, promoting citizenship and community cohesion. We broadcast 24 hours a day with live presenters operating usually between 07:00-22:00, although on some day’s coverage lasts until midnight. We have approximately 30 regular volunteer presenters who provide a wide ranging output for varied musical audiences including popular, rock, dance, soul, classical & Latin American. All shows feature Community News sections highlighting events & activities available within the East Lothian & surrounding areas. We actively cultivate interaction with local community groups promoting the advancement of the arts & culture in the immediate area by featuring them on air. Particular emphasis is given to mental health & wellbeing.

Constitutional objectives

1.1 To promote citizenship and community cohesion in the locality by providing a community radio station for those living in the Haddington and surrounding area 1.2 The encouragement of volunteering across the generations both in running the station and in fund-raising social events 1.3 To advance the education especially of the young people of the area by providing training and so enabling them to take part in the making and presenting of programmes 1.4 To promote the advancement of the arts, culture or science in the immediate area through broadcasts from the radio station
