What the charity exists to do
The Highlands & Islands Environment Foundation (HIEF) is a local, place-based philanthropic fund working with grassroots organisations & local communities, to protect & restore the natural beauty, biodiversity & eco-systems of the Highlands & Islands. HIEF supports projects empowering communities for nature. protecting habitats & species. tackling environmental threats. & restoring ecosystems. Collating & maximising philanthropic funds from people & organisations, HIEF awards grants & provides additional support, if required, to test & develop best practice solutions to create systemic, grassroots-driven change for sustained positive environmental impact.

‘The organisation’s purposes are: To advance environmental protection and improvement, through the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment within Scotland, in particular but not exclusively by monitoring and protecting natural habitats and biodiversity, in the land and in the sea and establishing marine protected areas. and To advance education, with a particular focus on education relating to conserving, protecting and improving the physical and natural environment of Scotland through the dissemination of information about conservation, protection and improvement activities including waste, water and energy usage’
