02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The Edwin Morgan Trust was established in 2012 to administer the generous Award which the poet wished to create from the earnings of a long and distinguished writing career. The Trust ensures that talented poets have a focus for extending the scope of their writing through national competition, publication and mentoring. It works to uphold the wishes of the late Edwin Morgan by supporting his vision for the development of Scottish poetry and translation. We approach our objectives as he would have – with creativity, inclusivity and a hopeful vision of the future. Our mission is to provide opportunities for young and emerging Scottish poets to thrive, with a biennial poetry award (EMPA) that actively seeks out and supports young emerging poets, and responsive programming that ‘opens the doors’ to innovative approaches to poetry for poets of all ages.
